CBD vs. CBN – What is the Difference?

If you’ve ever tried cannabis, then your questions mainly circulate around its growth and substitutes. You’ll be surprised to find out that approximately 113 different types of cannabinoids are found within the cannabis plant. These are defined as important chemicals, which interact with specific receptors inside your body to produce the desired effect. It is also these cannabinoids that make give marijuana its medical use. Several cannabinoids are used which include THC, CBN, CBD. These are rapidly being acknowledged by various scientists; let’s take a look ourselves.

What is CBN?

This cannabinoid comes from THC when it is broken down due to UV light exposure of oxygenation. This indicates that CBN is not naturally found in the cannabis plant. Since THC is found in the buds and flowers of the plants, young cannabis plants will not contain CBN. Most people cannot seem to look past the fact that it is derived from THC somehow, and eventually, fail to acknowledge its benefits. It was among the first cannabinoids that was identified in the early 1930s.

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol is a naturally occurring compound discovered in the cannabis plant, and it is identified as a safe and non-addictive substance. CBD is known for its therapeutic properties, which are confirmed by scientist all over the world. Unlike THC, CBD does not make you feel intoxicated since they trigger different receptors in our body.

In fact, CBD is known to lessen the psychoactive effects of THC which can be useful to those people who want the benefits of cannabis without feeling high. There are certain products such as CBD oil which can be a good treatment option for those people who are cautious about trying cannabis for the first time.

Benefits of CBN

Even though research on CBN isn’t nearly as extensive as done on CBD or THC, there is still plenty of evidence that this cannabinoid has a lot of pros. CBN is known to be a strong sedative which in turn makes it effective as an anti-anxiety drug. Steep Hill Labs also confirmed that CBN contains relaxing effects, which can be compared to diazepam, which is a pharmaceutical. Moreover, a study in 1995 on mice proved that CBN could result in increased sleep time.

On a further note, both this cannabinoid is known as an anti-inflammatory and possesses certain pain-relieving properties. CBN appears to influence the activity of neurons that are sensitive to capsaicin, which is the main ingredient in pain relievers.

More so, CBN shows signs to stimulate appetite which can help people who struggle to maintain an appetite due to diseases such as cancer, and there may also be evidence to show that CBN can directly fight cancer by slowing down the growth of cancer cells; it was found that CBN reduces tumor sizes in conditions of lung cancer.

Along with this, research shows that CBN has the power to fight off harmful bacteria such as MRSA, a bacterial infection which is resistant to antibiotics. Furthermore, it has been found that CBN can help promote the production of new bone by activating stem cells. This can also be intriguing for scientists who might want to use it as a therapy for osteoporosis because it can aid in healing fractured bones.

Benefits of CBD

Based on studies done previously, CBD provides natural solutions to conditions like arthritis, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, etc. CBD has the ability to alleviate pain and inflammation in any individual’s body from conditions such as Joint Pain and Arthritis. Like CBN. CBD also promotes bone growth and aids in the healing process if a fracture occurs.

Certain sleeping condition such as insomnia is a common occurrence in many people, and it can be harmful since sleep is that period in which our body flushes out toxins and restores itself. CBD can do the trick under such circumstances as it promotes relaxation which gives way to a healthier sleeping pattern. It combats conditions like restlessness, anxiety, and stress. Whenever people are suffering from any condition or disease, the first solution is medication.

Over time, through the constant consumption people develop a dependency on them. Research has shown that CBD can combat this exact dependency that is developed. On the same note, CBD can also prevent relapses, withdrawal symptoms and help addictive behavior in patients. Through recent studies, it has been shown that CBD is effective at treating high blood pressure. Furthermore, it was also shown that CD might even reduce cardiac inflammation and deter cell death caused by oxidative stress. CBD not only acts as an anxiolytic but also has analgesic action with anti-inflammatory and anti-depressant properties.

Side Effects of CBD

Although researchers have found no significant risk of CBD on the nervous system or mood, many people claim to feel tired after using it. People also reported diarrhea and changes in weight or appetite. Moreover, researchers have linked marijuana during pregnancy to impairments in the fetal development of neurons.

Furthermore, regular use among teenagers has led to changes in intelligence, behavior, and memory. There’s also the issue of legality as CBD is mostly available in the United States and its presence is shaky in other areas. High doses of CBD can make the user feel lethargic and dizzy, which will result in an overall bad experience.

Side Effects of CBN

Studies have found out that using cannabis at a younger age results in long term deficits in attention and impairment both in cognitive function and mood. Cannabis use during a younger age also results in increased risk of schizophrenia-like psychoses.

Does CBD or CBN Get you High?

CBD does not get the user high, in fact, it works against the effects of THC and prevents intoxication intentionally. Certain CBD products such as oils or balms are made and sold in places where it is legal, for example, California, are made from strained cannabis which has high levels of CBD rather than THC. This is done so users can enjoy the benefits of this without feeling intoxicated.

CBN, on the other hand, has some psychoactive effects but they are very mild. These effects can act as a powerful sedative in some products that have a high percentage of CBN, but generally, users do not experience any noticeable psychoactive effects.

Comparison between CBD and CBN

1. Similarities

Both CBD and CBN are two major cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. They get into your bloodstream after consuming marijuana from where it gets transported to the rest of the body and brain. Both of them release specific neurons that result in a wide range of effects. CBD and CBN activate the cannabinoid receptors present; these receptors are of two types, C1 & C2. C2 receptors are present in the peripheral tissue while C1 receptors are present in the brain and the peripheral tissue.

2. Differences

There are multiple differences between both such as their formation. CBD is a derivative of THC. It is available when THC is broken down, and the plant decarboxylates. This result in the bonds breaking between acid molecules, and you end up with CBD. CBN, on the other hand, does not exist naturally and only occurs when THC is broken down due to UV light exposure.

Even though its effects are extremely mild, CBN is psychoactive and can get you high while CBD is not, therefore it will not get you high.

They also differ between benefits such that CBD is non-psychoactive and does not affect sleeping conditions if taken in small doses. Therefore, high doses of CBD are required to get better sleep. On the flip side, CBN creates a strong sedative effect even if it is taken in small doses.

Effect on the appetite

Another difference is their effect on the appetite; for example, CBD is an appetite stimulant while CBN suppresses appetite to overcome conditions such as obesity. Along with this, small doses of CBD have proved to be ineffective while reducing pressure caused by an eye disease, Glaucoma. However, CBN is effective and can be a good treatment alternative even if it is given in small doses.

In addition to this, CBD has the benefit of acting against anxiety and cancer. However, CBN does not target these aspects. Similarly, CBD relieves insomnia and ischemia along with acting as an, but CBN does not target these aspects as well.

Finally!

You’ve probably heard people talk about CBD and its benefits regarding sleep and anxiety, however, it has many more advantages which scientists and different researchers are discovering as it gets more and more popular. People are now using CBD for pain relief and as a way to help with any addiction.

The attention, although, has always been on CBD when CBN is also showing various promising results. It can be quite powerful to generate bone tissue, relief pain, and contributes to sleep-inducing effects.

With multiple advantages popping up, more research is bound to take place on CBN and other cannabinoids. Maybe, CBN products will be available alongside CBD oils in local dispensaries in the near future!
